Axar Patel Named Delhi Capitals Captain for IPL 2025
Delhi Capitals have announced all-rounder Axar Patel as their new captain for the IPL 2025 season. The decision follows the departure of former skipper Rishabh Pant, who was acquired by Lucknow Super Giants for a record INR 27 crore during the mega auction.
Axar Patel’s Leadership Role
Axar Patel has been a key player for Delhi Capitals since joining the franchise in 2019. Over six seasons, he has played 82 matches for the team, scoring 967 runs and taking 62 wickets with an economy rate of 7.09. The 31-year-old has extensive IPL experience, having featured in 150 matches overall.
Expressing his gratitude and excitement for the new responsibility, Axar stated, “It is my absolute honour to captain the Delhi Capitals, and I’m deeply grateful to our owners and support staff for placing their faith in me.” He further added, “I’ve grown as a cricketer and a human being during my time here at the Capitals, and I feel ready and confident to lead this side going forward.”
Delhi Capitals’ Management Support
The franchise’s management expressed strong confidence in Axar’s appointment as captain. The team chairman highlighted that Axar has been an integral part of the franchise since 2019 and fully represents the team’s values.
One of the team co-owners also voiced support for the decision, emphasizing Axar’s evolution from a dependable spinner to a complete all-rounder. His performances in recent international tournaments, including India’s triumphs in global events, have reinforced his leadership potential.
Team Composition and Expectations
Under Axar Patel’s leadership, Delhi Capitals aim to secure their first-ever IPL title. The squad includes a mix of experienced international stars and emerging young talents, with players like KL Rahul, Faf du Plessis, and Mitchell Starc bolstering the lineup.
Delhi Capitals will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign with a home fixture in Visakhapatnam on March 24 against Lucknow Super Giants, now captained by former DC leader Rishabh Pant.
