Astra Microwave and HAL Collaborate to Equip Tejas Jets with Indigenous Uttam AESA Radar
In a significant stride towards bolstering India’s defense self-reliance, Astra Microwave Products Ltd. and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) are in advanced discussions to integrate the indigenous Uttam Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) Radar into the upcoming fleets of Tejas Mk1A and Tejas Mk2 fighter aircraft. This collaboration aims to enhance the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force (IAF) by equipping its indigenous fighters with state-of-the-art radar systems.
Indigenous Radar Integration for Tejas Mk1A and Mk2
The Uttam AESA Radar, developed by the Electronics and Radar Development Establishment (LRDE), is poised to replace imported radar systems in the Tejas fleet. Equipped with over 980 Transmit/Receive (TR) modules, this advanced radar significantly enhances the aircraft’s ability to detect, track, and engage multiple targets simultaneously. The first unit is slated for delivery to HAL for integration into the Tejas Mk2 prototype, expected to roll out by the end of 2023.
Transition from Imported to Indigenous Systems
Initially, the Tejas Mk1A jets were to be fitted with the ELM-2052 AESA radar from Israel’s ELTA Systems. However, HAL plans to commence the integration of the indigenous Uttam AESA Radar starting with the 41st aircraft in the 83-unit order placed by the IAF. This strategic shift underscores India’s commitment to reducing dependence on foreign technology and promoting self-sufficiency in defense production.
Enhancing Combat Capabilities with Advanced Radar Technology
The integration of the Uttam AESA Radar is expected to markedly improve the Tejas fighters’ combat effectiveness. Its advanced features offer superior situational awareness, enabling pilots to make informed decisions in complex operational scenarios.
