Ashish Nehra Keeps Rohit, Kohli 2027 World Cup Door Open
Former India pacer Ashish Nehra has refused to rule out Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup, saying form and performance rather than age should ultimately determine whether the two veterans remain part of India’s plans.
Nehra Says 2027 World Cup Call Is Too Early
Nehra said it was impossible to make a definite prediction with around 13 months remaining before the tournament, pointing out that selection scenarios can change dramatically even weeks before a major competition.
He argued that if Rohit and Kohli continue performing at the required level, there is no reason to exclude them purely because of their age. However, Nehra stopped short of predicting that either player would definitely make the final squad.
Rohit and Kohli Continue in ODI Format
Both Rohit and Kohli have retired from Test and T20I cricket and currently remain available only in the 50-over format.
Their future has consequently attracted considerable attention as India builds towards the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Rohit will be 40 during the tournament, while Kohli will be 38 and turn 39 later that year.
Both senior batters have continued contributing in ODIs during 2026, keeping themselves firmly in contention as India assesses its long-term combination.
Form and Fitness Could Decide Selection
Nehra stressed that reputations and past achievements alone would not settle the issue, with performances over the coming year likely to play a decisive role.
He also described age as no automatic barrier for players capable of maintaining international standards.
Rohit and Kohli are next expected to feature in India’s ODI series against the West Indies beginning September 27, providing another opportunity to strengthen their cases for the 2027 World Cup.
