Ajit Doval Meets Myanmar President In Delhi
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval met Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing in New Delhi during the Myanmar leader’s first official visit to India since taking office. The meeting comes as India looks to balance border security, regional connectivity and strategic interests amid Myanmar’s internal instability.
Ajit Doval Meets Myanmar President
Doval called on President U Min Aung Hlaing during his multi-day visit to India. The meeting followed External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s interaction with the Myanmar leader, in which India underlined the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation.
The visit is being watched closely because Myanmar shares a long border with India’s northeastern states and remains central to India’s security and connectivity strategy.
India Myanmar Relations In Focus
India’s engagement with Myanmar is driven by several priorities, including border management, insurgency concerns, development projects and regional connectivity. Myanmar is also important for India’s Act East policy and projects linking the northeast with Southeast Asia.
The visit included a stop at Bodh Gaya, reflecting the Buddhist and civilisational ties between the two countries.
Myanmar Visit Raises Strategic Questions
Min Aung Hlaing’s visit comes despite international criticism of Myanmar’s military-backed government, which has faced isolation since the 2021 military coup and continuing civil conflict.
For India, the diplomatic challenge is to maintain working ties with Myanmar while protecting security interests along the border. The meeting with Doval signals that New Delhi is treating the visit as a strategic engagement, particularly at a time when China’s influence in Myanmar remains a major regional factor.
