Ajit Doval in Beijing for India-China Border Talks
National Security Adviser Ajit Doval arrived in Beijing on Monday for a two-day visit ahead of the 25th round of India-China Special Representatives talks on the boundary question. Doval is scheduled to meet Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on August 25 as both countries continue efforts to stabilise relations after years of border tensions.
Ajit Doval to Hold Border Talks With Wang Yi
Doval, India’s Special Representative for the boundary negotiations, travelled to China at Wang Yi’s invitation. Wang serves as China’s Special Representative on the India-China boundary question in addition to being foreign minister.
The talks will focus on the long-running boundary dispute, maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control and measures aimed at preventing fresh military friction.
The Special Representatives mechanism was established in 2003 to pursue a political framework for resolving the India-China boundary question.
India-China Ties Show Signs of Improvement
The latest meeting comes as New Delhi and Beijing attempt to rebuild bilateral relations following the military standoff that began in eastern Ladakh in 2020.
The two sides reached a disengagement agreement in 2024 covering remaining friction points, helping revive high-level diplomatic engagement. However, management of the disputed border continues to remain central to any sustained improvement in India-China relations.
Doval to Meet Chinese Vice President Han Zheng
During the Beijing visit, Doval is also scheduled to call on Chinese Vice President Han Zheng.
The talks assume additional significance ahead of the BRICS summit India is expected to host in New Delhi in September. Chinese President Xi Jinping is widely expected to attend, although his participation has not yet been formally confirmed.
Doval and Wang’s discussions are therefore expected to address both border management and the broader trajectory of India-China relations.
