Air India Plans More Widebody Jets, Targets Profit
Air India is planning to expand its fleet of widebody aircraft while implementing extensive cost-cutting measures to restore profitability. Chief Executive Officer Tewolde Gebremariam outlined the strategy at the Aviation India Summit in New Delhi on November 3, 2026, emphasising international expansion, improved operational efficiency and stronger competition with foreign airlines.
Air India Plans Additional Widebody Aircraft Orders
Gebremariam said the airline was considering additional orders for long-haul aircraft to strengthen its international network and recover market share from overseas competitors.
Air India has already placed orders for 80 widebody aircraft, comprising 50 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 10 Boeing 777Xs.
The airline has held discussions with Airbus and Boeing about further purchases, although the number of additional aircraft has not been finalised.
Air India Targets Profitability After Rs 22,238 Crore Loss
The airline group reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 22,238 crore in FY2025-26, compared with Rs 10,859 crore in the previous financial year.
Gebremariam identified high operating costs as a major concern and said reducing expenditure across business functions was an immediate priority.
A dedicated team has been established to identify savings, improve productivity and strengthen coordination between Air India and its low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express.
The CEO expressed confidence that profitability could be achieved soon, although no specific timeline was announced.
Mumbai and Bengaluru to Gain Importance as Aviation Hubs
Air India also plans to rebalance its international network following disruptions caused by Pakistan’s airspace restrictions.
The airline is considering shifting some Europe and North America services from Delhi to Mumbai while exploring Bengaluru as a third major international hub.
Delhi will remain important for eastern and southeastern routes.
Gebremariam said the airline would pursue long-term expansion while addressing immediate financial challenges, positioning Air India to compete more effectively in international aviation.
