Adani Denies Deal Behind US Case Dismissal

Gautam Adani has denied that any promise, agreement or benefit influenced the US Department of Justice’s decision to seek the dismissal of criminal charges against him and seven others. The industrialist made the statement in a sworn affidavit filed before a federal court in New York on July 15.

Adani Denies Quid Pro Quo in US Case

Adani said he was unaware of anything being promised, offered, sought, received or accepted in connection with the proposed dismissal of the indictment.

The affidavit followed a July 8 direction from US District Judge Nicholas Garaufis, who asked Adani to disclose whether any undisclosed arrangement was linked to the Justice Department’s decision.

The court is yet to rule on the department’s motion seeking dismissal of the indictment with prejudice.

$10 Billion US Investment Had No Role

Adani also denied that his proposed $10 billion investment in US energy security and infrastructure projects played any role in the decision.

He said the investment announcement was made in November 2024 before the indictment and a related civil complaint were made public, adding that he was unaware of the proceedings at that time.

Adani acknowledged that his lawyers later raised the proposed investment during settlement discussions. However, he said US authorities informed them that it would not be considered while deciding whether to withdraw the charges.

US Court Reviews DOJ Dismissal Request

The 2024 indictment alleged that Adani and other executives participated in a scheme involving more than $250 million in bribes to Indian officials and misled investors while raising funds.

The Justice Department has since argued that the case lacked sufficient legal and factual grounds and concerned conduct largely based outside the United States. Adani and his group have consistently denied wrongdoing.
