AAP Sweeps Punjab Civic Polls
The Aam Aadmi Party secured a major victory in the Punjab municipal elections, winning the highest number of wards across the state and strengthening its urban political position ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. The Congress finished second, while Independents, Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP followed in the final tally.
AAP Dominates Punjab Civic Poll Results
AAP won 957 of the 1,977 wards that went to polls, emerging as the clear leader in the civic body elections. The result is being seen as a strong boost for the ruling party led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The party’s performance across several municipal bodies indicates its continued influence in Punjab’s urban centres. AAP leaders described the result as public approval for the state government’s work.
Congress Finishes Second In Punjab Municipal Elections
The Congress secured 397 wards and finished a distant second. While the party retained pockets of influence in some urban bodies, the overall result showed a sharp gap between Congress and AAP.
Independents also performed strongly, winning 251 wards. Their showing highlights the local nature of municipal elections, where candidate-level influence often plays a major role.
BJP Finishes Fifth Behind SAD
The Shiromani Akali Dal won 191 wards, placing fourth in the overall tally. The BJP finished fifth with 167 wards, behind AAP, Congress, Independents and SAD. The Bahujan Samaj Party won seven wards.
The results are politically significant as Punjab heads toward the next Assembly election cycle. For AAP, the civic poll victory provides organisational momentum. For the opposition, the results underline the challenge of rebuilding urban support before 2027.
