8th Pay Commission Could Bring Substantial Salary Hike
Central government employees might soon witness a significant increase in their salaries as the 8th Pay Commission is anticipated to bring a 186% hike in minimum wages.
Reports suggest an announcement regarding the new pay commission could be made during Budget 2025-26.
Significant Increase in Minimum Salary
Currently, employees earn a minimum basic salary of ₹18,000 per month under the 7th Pay Commission, an upgrade from the ₹7,000 minimum under the 6th Pay Commission. According to Shiv Gopal Mishra, Secretary (Staff Side) of the National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (JCM), the fitment factor under the 8th Pay Commission could rise to 2.86 from the current 2.57.
If approved, this increase would raise the minimum salary to ₹51,480, marking a 186% jump from the present salary structure. The proposed hike in the fitment factor will directly impact not just salaries but also pensions, which could rise to ₹25,740 from the current ₹9,000.
Announcement Expected in Budget 2025-26
While there is no official confirmation about the timeline for the new pay commission, it is widely speculated that the government may announce it in the upcoming Budget 2025-26. Employee unions had earlier raised their demands during Budget 2024-25, with appeals submitted to the Cabinet Secretary and the finance ministry.
Employee Representation and Expectations
The National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), which represents employee grievances, submitted a memorandum in July 2024 urging the government to expedite the process of forming the 8th Pay Commission. A follow-up appeal was also made in August 2024.
The council’s meeting, initially slated for November, has been rescheduled for December, where further clarity on the 8th Pay Commission’s formation is expected.
If implemented, the 8th Pay Commission promises to significantly enhance the financial well-being of central government employees, addressing long-standing demands for salary adjustments and ensuring economic security for millions.
