Zelenskyy Slams Trump’s Russian Diesel Deal

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly criticised President Donald Trump’s agreement to purchase Russian diesel, warning that the deal would provide Moscow with additional revenue to finance its war against Ukraine. Speaking at a European Union summit in Brussels on October 16, 2026, Zelenskyy welcomed greater European involvement in peace negotiations while questioning Russia’s willingness to end the conflict.

Zelenskyy Criticises Trump’s Russian Diesel Agreement

Zelenskyy argued that renewed American purchases of Russian diesel would financially benefit Moscow despite continuing Russian military operations in Ukraine.

He maintained that the agreement would do little to offset global fuel shortages caused by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

French President Emmanuel Macron also criticised the arrangement, warning that it could undermine diplomatic unity and create divisions among Ukraine’s Western allies.

Ukraine Welcomes Greater European Role in Peace Talks

Zelenskyy expressed support for European leaders taking a more prominent role in negotiations aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

He accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of lacking genuine interest in peace, describing Moscow’s approach to negotiations as insincere.

Putin, meanwhile, announced plans to establish a security zone inside Ukrainian territory along Russia’s border, insisting that the proposal would not be open to negotiation.

Peace talks remain stalled, with Moscow and Kyiv blaming each other for continued hostilities.

Trump Disputes Responsibility for Starlink Restrictions

Zelenskyy also raised concerns about disruptions affecting Starshield, the military-grade satellite communications system used by Ukrainian forces.

He said services had partially improved but were not fully restored, potentially affecting Ukraine’s ability to defend civilians against Russian attacks.

Trump denied that he or Elon Musk was responsible for the reported restrictions.

The disagreement comes as Trump criticises Ukraine’s renewed strikes against Russian oil refineries, arguing that the attacks contribute to rising global energy prices.
