Zelenskyy Signals Plan to Replace Defence Minister
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he intends to replace the country’s defence minister as part of a broader effort to recalibrate Ukraine’s leadership during the ongoing war with Russia. Speaking publicly, Zelenskyy said changes at the top of the defence establishment were being considered to improve efficiency, coordination, and accountability at a critical stage of the conflict.
Focus on Wartime Effectiveness
Zelenskyy said the Defence Ministry needs renewed momentum to better manage battlefield requirements, weapons procurement, and coordination with international partners supplying military assistance. He indicated that the proposed change is aimed at strengthening decision-making and adapting the ministry to evolving military and technological challenges rather than reflecting dissatisfaction with the armed forces themselves.
Possible Successor and Process
The Ukrainian president noted that he has been evaluating potential candidates from within the government, including senior ministers with experience in technology and innovation, as part of efforts to modernise defence systems and logistics. However, no formal appointment has yet been announced. Any change in the defence minister’s post would require approval by Ukraine’s parliament, in line with constitutional procedures.

The proposed defence leadership change comes amid a wider reorganisation of Ukraine’s wartime administration. Zelenskyy has emphasised that leadership adjustments are necessary to keep institutions aligned with the country’s strategic priorities and to maintain public and international confidence as the conflict continues.
