Zelenskyy Says Ukraine Ready For Elections Soon
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that the country is prepared to hold national elections within the next two to three months, provided security conditions are met. The remarks came after questions from former US President Donald Trump, who suggested Ukraine must demonstrate its commitment to democracy.
Voting during wartime remains difficult
Elections cannot normally be held under martial law, which has been in place since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Zelenskyy said that Ukrainian lawmakers may need to pass legislation to allow voting to take place, especially in areas affected by fighting. He also highlighted the need to protect soldiers, displaced citizens and communities near the front line.
Security guarantees sought from allies
Zelenskyy called on the United States and European partners to support Ukraine with air defence, logistics and infrastructure necessary to conduct safe elections. According to him, these measures would ensure that polling stations can operate without risk.
No change in position on territory
The President reiterated that Ukraine will not give up territory to end the war. He said any peace plan must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and cannot be based on concessions. Discussions with Western governments on a revised peace proposal are ongoing.
