Zelensky Warns Against US Funding Cuts Amid Escalating War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has issued a stark warning that Ukraine could face defeat in its war with Russia if the United States, its primary military backer, withdraws funding.
Speaking to Fox News, Zelensky emphasized the critical role of US support, describing it as essential for Ukraine’s survival and ability to prevail against Russian aggression.
US Support Crucial for Ukraine
Zelensky stated, “If they will cut, I think we will lose.” He acknowledged Ukraine’s efforts in producing military equipment but admitted it is insufficient without substantial external support. Highlighting the importance of international unity, he said, “What is most important is unity between Ukraine and the United States.”
US President-elect Donald Trump has promised to end US involvement in wars and has claimed he could resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict within 24 hours, though he has not provided specifics. Zelensky cautiously agreed Trump could influence Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying, “He is stronger than Putin… the President of the United States has the strength, authority, and weapons.”
Escalating Battlefield Challenges
Ukraine is currently enduring a “very difficult period” on the battlefield, as described by Zelensky. Russian forces have accelerated their territorial gains, reportedly seizing 2,700 square kilometers in 2024, a significant increase from the 465 square kilometers captured in 2023, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Ukraine’s recent incursion into Russia’s Kursk region has faced setbacks, with Russian troops countering Kyiv’s offensive.
Controversy Over German-Russian Talks
Zelensky criticized German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for holding a phone conversation with Putin, describing it as opening a “Pandora’s box.” He argued that Putin’s isolation is crucial for increasing international pressure on Russia.
As the war continues, Ukraine’s reliance on US funding and weapons remains central to its strategy, with Zelensky appealing for continued global solidarity to resist Russian advances.
