Zelensky Alleges Foreign Mercenaries in Ukraine War
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has claimed that foreign nationals are fighting alongside Russian forces in northeastern Ukraine. Speaking during a visit to troops near Vovchansk in the Kharkiv region, Zelensky said Ukrainian forces have encountered individuals from countries including China, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and several African nations.
Ukraine Promises Firm Response
Zelensky described the presence of these foreign fighters as a threat to Ukraine’s sovereignty and vowed to take appropriate measures. He did not provide specific evidence during his address but emphasized that Ukraine would continue to monitor and respond to foreign participation in the war.
Pakistan and China Reject Allegations
Following Zelensky’s statement, both Pakistan and China issued strong denials. Pakistan’s Foreign Office stated that no Pakistani nationals are officially involved in the conflict and called the accusations baseless. China also denied any involvement, insisting that any citizens found in Ukraine are acting independently.
Captured Fighters Not Linked to Governments
Earlier this year, Ukraine claimed it had captured a few individuals of foreign origin fighting for Russia, including two Chinese nationals. However, investigations indicated that these individuals were not sent by any government and may have joined through private recruitment channels, including social media or mercenary groups.
Voluntary Participation or Mislabeling?
Military analysts believe that while some foreigners may be present in the conflict zone, there is no evidence to support the claim that they are part of formal state-sponsored deployments. The use of the term “mercenaries” may refer to contract fighters or ideological volunteers rather than official foreign soldiers.
Diplomatic Sensitivity
Zelensky’s remarks come at a time of high international tension, and such claims—if not backed by strong proof—could strain diplomatic relations with countries not directly involved in the war. Ukraine has not released further details or documentation regarding the nationalities of those allegedly captured.
