Zaheer Khan Group Acquires Jaffna Kings

Former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has entered franchise ownership after Stockholm-based Anchor Sports AB acquired the Jaffna Kings in the Lanka Premier League. The four-time champions will now compete under the name Anchor Jaffna Kings.

Zaheer Khan Group Acquires Jaffna Kings

Zaheer is a co-owner of Anchor Sports AB, which has taken control of the franchise during the ongoing LPL 2026 season. The acquisition gives the former Indian bowler a direct role in the ownership and strategic development of one of Sri Lanka’s most successful T20 teams.

Anchor Sports is expected to use Zaheer’s international cricket experience to strengthen the franchise’s sporting structure and long-term commercial strategy. Further details about possible changes to the team’s management have not yet been announced.

Jaffna Kings Rebranded in LPL 2026

Following the acquisition, the franchise has been renamed Anchor Jaffna Kings. The change introduces the new owner’s identity while retaining the Jaffna Kings brand, which has developed a strong following in Sri Lankan franchise cricket.

The team’s existing player contracts, coaching arrangements and LPL 2026 schedule are expected to continue without disruption. Jaffna entered the competition as its most decorated franchise, having won four titles, including the inaugural championship when it competed as Jaffna Stallions.

New Ownership Ends Operational Uncertainty

Sri Lanka Cricket and LPL rights holder Innovative Production Group recently assumed emergency control of Jaffna Kings after terminating the previous franchise agreement with Sports Commune. The termination followed the former owner’s failure to fulfil its financial obligations.

Tournament organisers subsequently took responsibility for player and staff contracts, payments and logistical arrangements while searching for new ownership. Anchor Sports AB’s acquisition ends that interim arrangement and restores a permanent ownership structure.

The deal also expands Zaheer’s involvement in cricket beyond coaching and team-management roles following his retirement from international cricket.
