Z-Morh Tunnel: Strategic All-Weather Link Between Kashmir and Ladakh

The Z-Morh Tunnel, a 6.5-kilometer, two-lane road tunnel situated near Gagangir in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, is poised to become a vital all-weather link between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. Named after the Z-shaped stretch of road it replaces, the tunnel ensures uninterrupted access to the Sonamarg tourist town, which previously faced closures during winter months due to heavy snowfall and avalanches.

Strategically, the Z-Morh Tunnel is integral to the larger Zojila Tunnel project, which aims to provide seamless connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh. This infrastructure is crucial for military logistics, enabling faster and more reliable movement of troops and equipment to border areas in Ladakh, a region of significant strategic importance due to its proximity to international borders.

Beyond its strategic significance, the tunnel is expected to boost the local economy by promoting tourism in Sonamarg, known for attractions like the Thajiwas Glacier and activities such as whitewater rafting on the Sind River. The enhanced accessibility is anticipated to lead to increased tourist footfall, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.

The construction of the Z-Morh Tunnel is part of a broader initiative to improve infrastructure in the Himalayan region, with a combined investment of approximately ₹1,400 billion (~US$17.5 billion) allocated for 31 road tunnels across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. These developments are set to transform the connectivity and economic landscape of the region, fostering growth and stability.
