Yuvraj Recalls Dhoni Call, Questions SRH Move
Yuvraj Singh has expressed disappointment over Sunrisers Hyderabad naming Ishan Kishan as stand-in captain in Pat Cummins’ absence, saying Abhishek Sharma had a stronger case based on his longer association with the franchise. In explaining his view, Yuvraj also recalled how MS Dhoni was unexpectedly made India captain in 2007 despite other senior contenders being in the mix.
Yuvraj Singh On SRH Captaincy Call
With Pat Cummins unavailable for the start of IPL 2026, Sunrisers Hyderabad appointed Ishan Kishan to lead the side. The decision drew attention because Abhishek Sharma, who has spent several years with the franchise and grown into a key player, was widely seen as another strong option. Yuvraj said he admired Ishan Kishan’s growth but felt Abhishek’s long service and leadership background made him deserving of the opportunity.
Yuvraj Recalls MS Dhoni Captaincy In 2007
While discussing the issue, Yuvraj referred to the 2007 transition in the Indian team, when MS Dhoni was handed the captaincy ahead of more senior names. Yuvraj said he, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag were among the experienced players around at the time, and Dhoni’s appointment came unexpectedly. He added that Dhoni eventually proved he was destined to lead India successfully, but from a player’s point of view, such decisions can still feel disappointing.
Abhishek Sharma Backing Remains Strong
Yuvraj said the emotional impact of being overlooked for captaincy can affect a player’s mindset, especially when the player has committed years to a team. At the same time, he noted that Abhishek and Ishan share a good relationship, which could help the team move forward smoothly. He also stressed that once the leadership decision has been made, the focus should shift to supporting the captain and using the disappointment as motivation.
