XI Jinping Urges EU to Handle Frictions Properly

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with top European Union leaders in Beijing on July 24, 2025, for a one-day summit marking 50 years of diplomatic ties. Amid rising trade tensions, Xi called for the “proper handling” of differences and warned against what he described as “decoupling and isolation.”

Beijing Pushes for Cooperation

President Xi emphasized that the challenges faced by the European Union “do not come from China.” He urged the EU to avoid imposing trade restrictions and to support a stable, open economic environment. The summit, held at Beijing’s request, was initially expected to be a two-day event but was shortened to one.

EU Highlights Trade Imbalance

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described the EU–China relationship as being at an “inflection point.” She expressed concern over the EU’s growing trade deficit with China, which reached over €300 billion last year. She urged Beijing to take practical measures to address the imbalance and ensure fair market access for European companies.

Limited Breakthroughs, But Climate Agreement in Sight

While the summit did not produce a joint declaration, both sides reportedly found common ground on climate issues. Discussions are expected to result in a follow-up agreement focusing on green technology, emissions, and cooperation on global climate goals.

Strategic Signals from China

President Xi warned the EU against building “walls and fortresses,” a reference to rising protectionist measures and Western alignment on issues like Ukraine and export controls. He said China supports a multipolar world and believes the EU should make “strategic choices” independently of external pressures.
