Xi Jinping Raises Taiwan Issue In Call With Donald Trump
Xi Jinping told Donald Trump during a phone call that the future of Taiwan remains central to China’s vision of the post-World War II international order. Xi defined Taiwan’s “return” to China as “integral” to that order and said the United States “understands how important the Taiwan question is to China.”
Pyongyang’s Reaction — Taipei Rejects Terms
Taiwan’s premier, Cho Jung‑tai, categorically rejected Xi’s view, stating that reunification with China “is not an option” for the island’s 23 million residents. He reaffirmed Taiwan’s sovereign status and dismissed Beijing’s push to integrate Taiwan under any framework such as “one country, two systems”.
Broader Diplomacy And Future Visits
The call also addressed other global issues, including the war in Ukraine and trade tensions between China and the U.S. Trump announced plans to visit Beijing in April 2026, with Xi expected to visit Washington later in the year. Analysts say the exchange signals cautious thawing of relations but warns that the Taiwan dispute remains a major flashpoint.
