Xi Decries ‘Cold War Mentality’ at SCO Summit
At the opening session of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, Chinese President Xi Jinping criticized “bullying behaviour” in global politics and urged nations to reject “Cold War mentality” and bloc confrontations. He called for fairness, inclusivity, and justice in international relations, stressing the need for a multi-polar world order.
Economic Support and Development Drive
Xi announced that China will provide 2 billion yuan in aid this year and pledged 10 billion yuan in loans over the next three years through an SCO development finance mechanism. He said the grouping should take advantage of its vast markets to expand trade, strengthen investment, and boost cooperation in science and technology.
Message Amid Global Tensions
The remarks come at a time of heightened global trade frictions, particularly U.S. tariff escalations that have hit developing economies. Xi’s comments were widely seen as a message aimed at Washington, presenting China’s alternative vision of global leadership and support for diplomatic, rather than confrontational, engagement among nations.
