Xi And Macron Hold Talks In Beijing
Chinese President Xi Jinping met French President Emmanuel Macron in Beijing on Wednesday during Macron’s state visit to China. The meeting focused on global security concerns, economic cooperation and growing geopolitical tensions affecting Europe and Asia.
Macron Urges China To Play Bigger Role On Ukraine
Macron reiterated that China should use its influence to help push for a path toward ending the war in Ukraine. He called for a ceasefire framework and emphasised the need for China to support international stability. Xi acknowledged the concerns but offered no public shift in China’s position, stating that China supports dialogue and opposes further escalation.
Trade Imbalances And Economic Concerns Raised
The leaders also discussed trade relations, with Macron stressing the need for a “fair rebalancing” of economic ties between China and the European Union. He highlighted Europe’s concerns about market access and industrial overcapacity. Xi said China remained committed to multilateral trade but urged Europe to avoid protectionism.
Cooperation Agreements Signed Despite Differences
Both sides announced cooperation agreements covering nuclear energy, green technology, cultural exchange and scientific research. However, analysts noted that major disagreements — particularly on Ukraine and global trade norms — remain largely unresolved.
