WWII Bomb Found in Hong Kong Forces Mass Evacuation
A World War II–era U.S.-made bomb was uncovered at a construction site in Quarry Bay, a busy residential and commercial district on Hong Kong Island. The explosive measured around 1.5 metres in length and weighed nearly 1,000 pounds (450 kilograms).
Evacuation Ordered
Authorities evacuated about 6,000 residents from 1,900 households in the surrounding area. The operation began late at night and concluded safely the following morning.
Public Safety Measures
Bomb disposal experts worked through the night to neutralize the device. Nearby roads were closed and transport services disrupted to maintain safety. No injuries were reported during the process.
Historical Context
During World War II, Hong Kong was under Japanese occupation and frequently bombed by Allied forces. Unexploded ordnance from that period is occasionally discovered during construction or excavation activities in the city.
