Woman Killed in Mumbai–Pune Expressway Crash

A major accident occurred on the Mumbai–Pune Expressway near the Adoshi tunnel in Raigad district on July 26, leaving one woman dead and at least 18 people injured. The incident involved a speeding container truck that reportedly lost control due to suspected brake failure and rammed into nearly 20 vehicles, including several luxury cars like BMWs and Mercedes. The crash took place around 11:30 AM in the ghat section of the expressway.

The woman who died was severely injured and later succumbed during treatment at a hospital. The other injured victims were rushed to a private hospital in Navi Mumbai for medical attention. At least three people remain in critical condition. The driver of the truck has been taken into custody and preliminary investigations indicate that he tested negative for alcohol. Authorities are probing whether mechanical failure or driver negligence was responsible for the accident.

The collision caused massive traffic disruption, with congestion stretching nearly five kilometers along the expressway. Emergency response teams, highway police, and road safety personnel reached the spot quickly to manage the scene and restore traffic flow. Alternate routes were arranged to ease the movement of vehicles caught in the jam.

The Mumbai–Pune Expressway is one of India’s busiest highways, handling thousands of vehicles daily. The incident has sparked fresh concerns over safety on this stretch, especially during monsoon months when the roads become more treacherous. Road safety experts have long recommended better vehicle maintenance checks, stricter speed control for heavy trucks, and timely mechanical inspections to avoid such mishaps.

Officials are expected to submit a detailed report on the incident. Meanwhile, commuters are being urged to exercise caution, particularly in ghat sections and sharp curves where accidents are more likely. The tragic incident serves as yet another reminder of the urgent need to strengthen enforcement and infrastructure on India’s highways.
