Wife Urges Release of Sonam Wangchuk, Claims No Access to Medicine
Gitanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, has written to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting her husband’s “unconditional release”. She alleged that she has had no contact with him since his detention and is unaware of his current health condition.
In her letter, she claimed Wangchuk was detained without being allowed to carry medicines or fresh clothes, and that his basic needs are uncertain. She referred to his recent 15-day fast in September, saying it left him physically weakened and in need of medical support.
She also described a “witch hunt” against Wangchuk, accusing authorities of harsh treatment to silence his advocacy. Gitanjali asked whether raising issues like climate change, education reform, and local indigenous rights in Ladakh is now being treated as a security threat.
Wangchuk was arrested on 26 September 2025 under the National Security Act (NSA) in connection with violent protests in Leh, which left four dead. The protests centered on demands for statehood and greater constitutional protections for Ladakh. He was moved to Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan.
The Ministry of Home Affairs also cancelled the FCRA licence of his NGO SECMOL shortly after the unrest. His wife denied allegations linking him to foreign funding or Pakistan ties, calling them “baseless propaganda.”
The BCCI or ICC are not involved in this case; the matter concerns legal and civil rights in India’s domestic framework. Authorities have not publicly responded to Gitanjali’s letter as of now.
