“Why Single Out India?” Goyal Challenges Western Oil Sanction Bias
Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has questioned the selective approach of Western nations towards sanctions on Russian oil, asking why India is being singled out. Speaking at a session in Berlin, Goyal pointed out that while European countries, including Germany and the UK, have reportedly secured exemptions from U.S. sanctions on Russian energy, India continues to face scrutiny despite engaging in legal trade.
India’s Right To Energy Security
Goyal stressed that India’s oil purchases from Russia are based on economic needs and energy security, not geopolitics. He asserted that New Delhi has every right to take commercial decisions independently, criticising attempts to portray India as non-compliant.
Exchange With UK Minister
Responding to a point raised by his UK counterpart regarding a Rosneft subsidiary, Goyal said India also hosts subsidiaries and expects equal treatment under international rules. His sharp remarks underscored India’s demand for consistent standards.
Broader Geopolitical Context
The debate comes as India continues to defend its Russian energy imports under global law, while Western nations argue such purchases indirectly support Moscow’s war. The exchange highlights growing tensions over sanctions regimes and reflects India’s push for strategic autonomy in foreign policy.
