WHO Suspends Gaza Medical Evacuations
The World Health Organization has suspended medical evacuations from Gaza through the Rafah crossing after a contractor working with the agency was killed during what it described as a security incident. The move has added to concerns over the worsening humanitarian situation, especially for critically ill patients waiting to leave Gaza for treatment in Egypt.
WHO Suspends Gaza Medical Evacuations
WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the agency was devastated by the death of a person contracted to provide services in Gaza. He said the organisation had halted that day’s medical evacuation mission through Rafah and that evacuations would remain suspended until further notice. WHO also said two of its staff members were present during the incident but were not injured.
Rafah Crossing Evacuations On Hold
The suspension affects one of the few remaining channels for moving seriously wounded and critically ill patients out of Gaza for specialised care. Medical evacuations through Rafah have been vital for patients whose treatment cannot be provided inside the territory because of severe damage to Gaza’s healthcare system and continuing shortages of medicines, equipment and safe hospital access.
Gaza Health Crisis Deepens
The incident comes as the humanitarian and medical situation in Gaza remains under extreme strain. Tedros’s statement did not specify who was responsible for the security incident, and authorities have not publicly released further operational details. The latest suspension is likely to further delay urgent care for patients already trapped in a collapsing war-zone health system. Claims about the wider death toll among healthcare workers continue to circulate, but those figures come from Gaza health authorities and remain part of the broader conflict information battle.
