WHO Implements Cost-Cutting Measures Following U.S. Withdrawal

The World Health Organization (WHO) is enacting cost-saving strategies and reassessing its health program priorities in response to the United States’ decision to withdraw from the agency. The U.S., previously the WHO’s largest financial contributor, accounted for approximately 18% of its funding. The withdrawal has intensified the WHO’s financial challenges, prompting immediate actions to mitigate the impact.

Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has outlined several measures to address the budget shortfall. These include significantly reducing travel expenditures, halting recruitment except in critical areas, and conducting meetings virtually to minimize costs. Additionally, the WHO plans to reform its funding structure by increasing mandatory fees from member states and seeking additional funding to ensure the continuity of essential health programs.

The U.S. withdrawal is scheduled to take effect on January 22, 2026. In the interim, the WHO is committed to supporting and protecting its staff while maintaining its global health initiatives. Further cost-cutting measures are anticipated as the organization navigates this transition.
