WHO Flags Attacks on Gaza Aid Site
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported that its humanitarian operations in Gaza have been severely compromised following direct attacks on its staff shelter and central warehouse in Deir al-Balah. The incidents occurred on July 21 and have triggered global concern over the safety of aid workers and the worsening health crisis in the region.
Shelter for Families Attacked, One Staff Detained
The facility targeted was housing WHO staff members and their families. The organization confirmed that during the raid, several women and children had to flee on foot. Male staff were detained, handcuffed, and questioned at gunpoint. Three of the four detainees have since been released, while one staff member remains in custody. In total, 32 individuals, including staff and relatives, were eventually relocated to another WHO office.
Medical Supplies Destroyed in Warehouse Fire
The WHO’s primary warehouse in Deir al-Balah suffered heavy damage from nearby strikes. A fire destroyed large stocks of essential medicines, surgical equipment, and emergency kits. The loss of supplies comes at a time when Gaza’s health infrastructure is already collapsing due to fuel shortages, damaged hospitals, and overcrowded clinics. The damaged facility was later looted by desperate civilians.
WHO Calls for Immediate Protection and Action
WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has demanded the unconditional release of the detained staff member and full protection for all humanitarian personnel and assets. He warned that aid delivery is now “paralysed,” putting over two million people at further risk as nearly 90% of Gaza is under evacuation or conflict orders.
Urgent Appeal for Humanitarian Access
The WHO has urged the international community to ensure uninterrupted delivery of medical and humanitarian supplies to Gaza. With hospitals unable to cope and logistics cut off, any delay in aid may result in more casualties and a complete breakdown of medical services in the region.
