WhatsApp Enforces Massive Account Ban in India
In a significant crackdown on misuse, WhatsApp has banned over 8.4 million accounts in India within a single month. This decisive action aims to combat the rising instances of scams, misinformation, and illegal activities on the platform.
Details of the Account Ban
According to Meta’s transparency report for August 2024, WhatsApp banned approximately 8.45 million accounts in India. Of these, 1.66 million accounts were immediately banned due to severe violations, over 1.6 million accounts were proactively removed through automated monitoring without user complaints, and the remaining accounts were banned following multiple complaints and further investigation.
Reasons Behind the Ban
The primary reasons for these bans include violations of WhatsApp’s terms of service, such as sending bulk or automated messages using unauthorized third-party tools, spamming users with promotional or misleading content, and sharing false or harmful information. Additionally, accounts involved in illegal activities like fraud, impersonation, phishing attacks, financial scams, illegal betting, drug trafficking, or extremist activities were also targeted.
User Complaints and Automated Monitoring
User reports played a critical role in identifying and banning harmful accounts. In August 2024, WhatsApp received 10,707 user complaints, leading to immediate action in 93% of the cases. The company also employs artificial intelligence and machine learning to detect suspicious behavior, proactively banning over 1.6 million accounts without requiring user complaints.
This large-scale action aligns with the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, underscoring WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing platform security and preventing misuse while complying with legal obligations.
