West Accused of Blocking Peace Talks, Lavrov Denies Civilian Targeting
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed Western nations are blocking peace efforts in Ukraine. Speaking in an interview, he alleged that European leaders were undermining negotiations and “searching for reasons to prevent talks.” He contrasted their approach with what he described as Donald Trump’s openness to diplomacy.
Denial of Civilian Attacks
Lavrov rejected accusations that Russian forces deliberately targeted civilians in Ukraine. He insisted that Russian operations focused only on military and industrial sites, dismissing international reports pointing to heavy civilian casualties.
Conditions for Peace and Zelenskyy’s Legitimacy
Lavrov questioned the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and said a summit with President Vladimir Putin would only be possible if Ukraine agreed to Russian conditions. These include rejecting NATO membership, territorial claims, and changes to language laws. He added that until these issues are settled, no meeting would take place.
U.S. Position on Negotiations
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance acknowledged some concessions from Russia in recent discussions but warned that a comprehensive peace deal remains distant. Washington reiterated that it will continue efforts to pursue a negotiated settlement while maintaining pressure on Moscow.
