WCA Escalates Dispute With ICC Over World Cup Rules

The World Cricketers’ Association (WCA) has raised fresh objections against the International Cricket Council (ICC) ahead of the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, intensifying tensions following the controversial exclusion of Bangladesh from the tournament.

Clash Over Player Participation Terms

The WCA criticised a new set of squad participation terms circulated by the ICC to players for the World Cup. The association said the updated terms differ from an earlier version agreed in 2024 and are more onerous and exploitative, particularly in areas concerning players’ name, image, likeness rights and use of personal data.

Bangladesh Row Adds Fuel

The dispute follows widespread criticism of the ICC after Bangladesh were replaced by Scotland in the World Cup line-up when the Bangladesh Cricket Board declined to send its team to India, citing safety and scheduling concerns. The WCA described the situation as a “sad moment for the sport” and has called for reflection on governing practices.

Broader Reactions

The broader cricket community has seen reactions from former players and administrators calling for the ICC to rebuild trust and ensure fair treatment for all member boards. The disagreement underscores rising friction between players’ representative groups and cricket’s governing body ahead of a major global event.
