Water Taxi Services to Connect Mumbai with Navi Mumbai Airport

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari announced the launch of water taxi services that will link various parts of Mumbai to the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport, slashing travel time to just 17 minutes.

Speaking at a rally in Thane, Gadkari highlighted how the initiative aims to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution in the Mumbai metropolitan area.

Infrastructure in Place for Seamless Connectivity

Gadkari revealed that jetties near the Navi Mumbai International Airport have already been constructed. The airport is expected to become operational by March 2025. Leveraging Mumbai’s coastal routes, these water taxis will offer a quick and efficient alternative for commuters.

The minister also unveiled plans to introduce amphibious sea planes capable of landing on smaller water bodies, including lakes in Thane. This innovative approach is designed to further enhance regional connectivity without the need for extensive runway infrastructure.

Supporting Urban and Intercity Mobility

In addition to water taxis, Gadkari discussed the New Delhi-Mumbai expressway, which will divert outstation vehicles and reduce intra-city traffic in Mumbai and Pune. He also announced plans for advanced electric buses, seating 135 passengers and offering a flight-like travel experience. These buses, which can travel 40 kilometers on a 30-second charge, represent a leap towards sustainable urban transport.

A Step Towards Cleaner, Smarter Transit

The government is actively engaging investors to implement these transformative projects, signaling a commitment to renewable energy and cutting-edge transportation technologies. These initiatives, announced ahead of the state assembly elections on November 20, mark a significant shift towards efficient, eco-friendly transit solutions for the region.
