Wangchuk’s Wife Defends Him Over ‘Pakistan Link’ Claims

Gitanjali J Angmo, wife of jailed Ladakh activist Sonam Wangchuk, rejected allegations that her husband had ties to Pakistan. She questioned why India can play cricket with Pakistan, yet her husband is not permitted to attend a UN conference there.

Arrest And Allegations

Wangchuk was arrested under the National Security Act after unrest in Leh on September 24, which left four people dead and several injured. Police have said they are investigating claims of “Pakistan links” and provocative speeches. Angmo said those charges are misplaced and that her husband has always used nonviolent and factual methods in his activism.

Gitanjali’s Statement On X

In a post on X, Angmo asked: “If India can play cricket with Pakistan, why can’t one of its heroes, @Wangchuk66, attend a UN conference there?” She noted that Wangchuk had earlier participated in a “Breathe Pakistan” climate event under UN auspices and dismissed the criticism as politically motivated.

Call For Transparency

The claims against him include alleged foreign visits and statements that authorities consider suspicious. Angmo called for fairness and transparency in the investigation, asserting that Wangchuk’s environmental work, educational reforms, and protests are aimed at justice for Ladakh, not foreign influence.
