Wangchuk Backs Protest, Seeks Ladakh Probe Report
Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has backed a proposed nationwide protest beginning October 2 while separately demanding answers over the September 2025 Ladakh violence, including publication of the judicial inquiry report and accountability for the police firing that killed four people.
Sonam Wangchuk Backs Nationwide Protest Call
Wangchuk expressed support for a nationwide mobilisation proposed from October 2 against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, though he indicated that he may not immediately participate physically in the protest.
His remarks come as political and civil society groups continue to raise questions over electoral processes and the functioning of the Election Commission.
Wangchuk, however, placed particular emphasis on unresolved issues surrounding Ladakh, where protests demanding constitutional safeguards and greater political representation turned violent in September 2025.
Ladakh Violence Probe Report Still Awaited
Four people were killed after security forces opened fire during protests in Leh on September 24, 2025. The Centre later constituted a judicial inquiry headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice B S Chauhan to examine the circumstances leading to the violence, police action and the deaths.
Wangchuk has demanded that the inquiry findings be released publicly, questioning why the report has still not been made available a year after the incident.
He has also sought clarity over whether orders were issued to use live ammunition and whether non-lethal crowd-control measures had been exhausted first.
Wangchuk Questions NSA Detention and Compensation
Wangchuk has also questioned his detention under the National Security Act following the violence. His detention was revoked earlier this year.
He has demanded higher compensation for families of those killed and for people who suffered serious injuries, while also seeking withdrawal of cases against individuals he says were not involved in violence.
