Virat Kohli Retires from Test Cricket Ahead of England Series

In a momentous announcement that marks the end of an era, Virat Kohli has officially retired from Test cricket, stepping away from the format ahead of India’s five-match home series against England starting June 20. The 36-year-old batter, widely regarded as one of India’s greatest modern cricketers, ends his red-ball career with 123 Test matches under his belt, scoring 9,230 runs at an average of 48.7, including 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries.

Redefining Indian Test Cricket

Kohli took over India’s Test captaincy in 2014 and brought with him a fierce competitive spirit, an obsession with fitness, and an unwavering desire to win in all conditions. His leadership transformed the Indian Test side into a formidable force, especially overseas. He remains India’s most successful Test captain, having led the team to 40 victories in 68 Tests.

His aggressive approach helped India dominate at home and achieve historic wins abroad, including a landmark series triumph in Australia in 2018–19. Kohli’s reign also saw India consistently top the ICC Test rankings, setting new standards for pace bowling depth and fielding excellence.

Struggles in Final Series and Reason for Exit

Kohli’s final appearance came during the 2024–25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Despite a strong start with a century in Perth, his form dipped in the following matches. He managed only 190 runs across five Tests, with frequent dismissals edging to the slip cordon raising concerns about his technique and place in the side.

This downturn prompted Kohli to take the call before selectors made the decision for him. In doing so, he exits on his own terms, while still commanding immense respect for his impact on Indian cricket.

A Big Void for India to Fill

Kohli’s departure comes soon after Rohit Sharma also stepped away from Test cricket, leaving Indian cricket at a transitional crossroads. The BCCI now faces the challenge of rebuilding the core of the Test team and identifying a new leadership group. With Kohli’s passion, experience, and intensity no longer in the dressing room, a void will be felt not just in runs, but in spirit.

As India prepares for the England series, the team will look to the next generation to carry forward the legacy of excellence that Kohli so fiercely upheld.
