Violence Erupts in Manipur as ‘Free Movement’ Initiative Begins
In a significant development, Manipur witnessed renewed violence on the inaugural day of the ‘Free Movement’ initiative, aimed at restoring normalcy in the state. The initiative, directed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, sought to ensure unrestricted movement across all routes in the region starting March 8, 2025.
Tensions escalated when a public bus en route to Senapati district was attacked in the Gamgiphai area of Kangpokpi district. A mob pelted the vehicle with stones, prompting security forces to intervene using tear gas and baton charges to disperse the crowd. Several demonstrators sustained injuries during the confrontation.
Arrests of Militant Group Members
In a concerted effort to restore law and order, authorities arrested seven individuals associated with banned militant outfits. The apprehended members belonged to groups such as the Kangleipak Communist Party (PWG) and Kanglei Yaol Kanna Lup (KYKL). These arrests occurred in various locations, including Lamphel in Imphal West district and near the India-Myanmar border in Tengnoupal district.
Recovery of Weapons and Ammunition
Security forces conducted extensive operations across multiple districts, resulting in the recovery of 114 weapons, including grenades, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and ammunition. These operations spanned areas such as Bishnupur, Senapati, Thoubal, Jiribam, Chandel, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Imphal East, and Imphal West. The administration had previously issued a two-week deadline for individuals to voluntarily surrender looted and illegal weapons without facing punitive actions, emphasizing the importance of contributing to peace and security.
Resumption of Bus Services Amidst Tensions
Despite the unrest, inter-district bus services resumed operations under heavy security escort. Buses bound for Churachandpur and Senapati districts departed from Imphal airport without passengers, accompanied by convoys of central security forces, including army personnel. The Churachandpur-bound bus traveled through Bishnupur district without incident, reaching Kangvai safely. Similarly, the Senapati-bound bus encountered no obstructions up to Kanglatongbi in Imphal West district.
Kuki-Zo Council’s Indefinite Shutdown
In response to the ‘Free Movement’ directive, the Kuki-Zo Council announced an indefinite shutdown in all Kuki-Zo areas starting from midnight on March 8, 2025. The council urged the central government to reconsider its stance to avoid further escalation of tension and violent confrontations. They expressed concerns over the safety of Meitei individuals crossing buffer zones, stating they could not guarantee free movement or take responsibility for any untoward incidents.
Government’s Commitment to Peace
The Manipur government has refuted claims made by certain organizations alleging that security forces were escorting local protestors, labeling these assertions as baseless and false. The state administration reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and normalcy, urging all stakeholders to cooperate and refrain from violence. The government emphasized that the resumption of bus services and the ‘Free Movement’ initiative are crucial steps toward alleviating public inconveniences and facilitating the movement of essential goods and passengers across key routes in the state.
