Vikram Doraiswami Named India Envoy To China

India has appointed senior diplomat Vikram K. Doraiswami as its next ambassador to China, with Beijing formally welcoming the move and expressing hope that bilateral relations will continue to improve. The Ministry of External Affairs announced that Doraiswami, a 1992-batch Indian Foreign Service officer and currently India’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, has been named the next Ambassador of India to the People’s Republic of China. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly and will succeed Pradeep Kumar Rawat in Beijing.

China said it welcomed Doraiswami’s appointment and expressed hope that the new envoy would play a positive role in the continued improvement and development of India-China relations. The response signalled a measured but positive diplomatic tone from Beijing following New Delhi’s announcement.
