Vijay’s Karur Rally Turns Deadly in Stampede
On Saturday evening in Karur district, Tamil Nadu, a political rally led by actor-turned-politician Vijay ended in tragedy when a sudden crowd surge caused a stampede-like crush, leaving at least 36 people dead and about 40 injured, state officials confirmed.
Victims and Injuries Reported
According to Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian, among the dead were eight children and 16 women. The victims were declared dead upon arrival at hospitals, while the injured are reported in stable condition.
How the Chaos Unfolded
The rally was part of Vijay’s campaign under the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, held at Velusamypuram on the Karur–Erode highway. Eyewitnesses say the crowd surged toward barricades near the stage around 7:45 pm, triggering panic, people fainting, and separation of children from families.
Vijay’s Response During the Panic
During the chaos, Vijay is said to have paused his speech and tossed water bottles into the crowd in an attempt to help. Ambulances struggled to navigate the congested site; volunteers formed human chains to create pathways for the injured, many of whom were rushed to Karur District Hospital and referred to medical colleges in Erode and Tiruchirappalli.
Inquiry and Compensation Measures
Authorities have launched a magisterial inquiry, and video footage as well as witness statements will be examined to determine responsibility. The Tamil Nadu government is reportedly considering ₹5 lakh compensation for families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured, though later reports say Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced ₹10 lakh to each affected family.
Political and Public Reaction
Political reaction has been swift: opposition parties have blamed organisers and local authorities for negligence, while TVK has defended that they followed instructions but were overwhelmed by the crowd. Chief Minister Stalin is expected to visit Karur to assess relief efforts and accountability.
This incident highlights the risks of managing large crowds in political gatherings, especially when public figures with high fan following draw unexpectedly massive attendance.
