Vijay Welcomes SC-Ordered CBI Probe
Following the Supreme Court’s order for a CBI investigation into the Karur stampede, actor-politician Vijay said this was exactly what his party had requested. The court also appointed a three-member oversight committee led by former Justice Ajay Rastogi to supervise the probe.
Vijay’s Response
Vijay expressed hope that justice would prevail in the case. He emphasised that once the CBI takes charge, all that remains is to await the investigation’s findings. His party’s general secretary, Arun Raj, said that the Madras High Court had acted outside its jurisdiction in ordering a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
The Tragedy at Karur
The stampede occurred on 27 September 2025 during a rally held by Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in Veluswamypuram, Karur. The event drew an unusually large crowd, far beyond approved limits. The tragedy claimed 41 lives and left many injured. The Supreme Court described the incident as one that “shook the conscience of the nation.”
What Happens Next
The CBI is required to submit monthly progress reports to the oversight committee. The committee will determine its own procedure for supervision. The probe is expected to examine crowd control, permissions granted, safety protocols, and accountability of event organisers and authorities.
