Vantara Supports Return of Elephant Madhuri to Kolhapur
Vantara, the animal rehabilitation centre in Jamnagar, has agreed to support the Maharashtra government’s move to return the elephant Madhuri—also known as Mahadevi—to Kolhapur. The elephant is currently housed at the Vantara facility following a court-mandated relocation in July 2025.
Legal Timeline Leading to the Move
Earlier this year, the Bombay High Court ordered Madhuri’s transfer to Vantara, citing health concerns and inadequate care at her previous location at the Jain Math in Nandani, Kolhapur. The Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s order at the end of July, after which Madhuri was moved. Vantara clarified that the relocation was based solely on judicial instructions and not at their request.
Public Sentiment and State Response
The relocation of Madhuri sparked significant public outrage in Kolhapur, where she holds religious and emotional importance. Over 200,000 citizens signed a petition demanding her return. In response, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced plans to file a review petition in the Supreme Court and proposed establishing a specialized rehabilitation centre in Kolhapur.
Proposed Rehabilitation Plan in Kolhapur
Vantara has offered full technical and veterinary support to build a new facility near Nandani Math, tailored for Madhuri’s medical and comfort needs. Features of the proposed centre include:
- Chain-free movement zones
- Hydrotherapy and laser therapy
- Sand pits and soft flooring for joint support
- Dedicated foot-care and veterinary units
- 24/7 monitoring and medical care
The goal is to create a safe, healing environment without disrupting her spiritual connection to the Jain Math.
Cultural Sensitivity and Scientific Care
Vantara reiterated its respect for the elephant’s cultural and spiritual significance. The organization emphasized that its mission is to provide medical care and rehabilitation, not interfere with traditions. It expressed readiness to work with the Jain community and the state to ensure Madhuri receives appropriate care, whether in Jamnagar or Kolhapur.
Next Steps Await Supreme Court Review
The final decision now rests with the Supreme Court. If the review petition is accepted, Madhuri could be allowed to return home under improved care. The Maharashtra government, Jain Math, and Vantara are expected to collaborate in setting up the proposed facility to meet the animal’s long-term health needs.
