Vande Bharat Sleeper to Launch on Guwahati–Kolkata Route
Indian Railways is set to introduce the Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Guwahati to Kolkata route in January. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that the new service will be launched after the completion of mandatory trials and safety checks. The train will mark the first sleeper version of the Vande Bharat series and is aimed at improving long distance overnight rail travel.
Designed for long distance overnight journeys
The Vande Bharat Sleeper train is fully air conditioned and built for journeys exceeding 1,000 kilometres. It will operate with modern sleeper coaches, including AC First Class, AC 2-tier and AC 3-tier. The train is equipped with advanced safety features, improved suspension systems and modern passenger amenities to ensure a smoother and quieter travel experience compared to conventional trains.
Connectivity boost for Northeast India
The Guwahati–Kolkata route is expected to significantly improve rail connectivity between the Northeast and eastern India. Railway officials said the sleeper service will offer a faster and more comfortable alternative to existing overnight trains, catering to both business and leisure travellers.
Part of broader modernisation plan
The launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper is part of Indian Railways’ broader push to modernise long distance passenger services. More sleeper variants are expected to be introduced on other major routes in the coming months as part of efforts to upgrade the rail travel experience across the country.
