Vaiko Urges Centre To Drop Kalpakkam Reactor
MDMK general secretary Vaiko has urged the Centre to abandon the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor project at Kalpakkam, shortly after the facility achieved first criticality. His remarks have added a political challenge to a project that the Union government has described as a major milestone in India’s civil nuclear programme.
Vaiko Opposes Kalpakkam Fast Breeder Reactor
Vaiko said the fast breeder reactor project should not be taken forward and argued that the Centre must halt it instead of moving toward full commissioning. He raised concerns over safety, environmental risks and the larger implications of operating such a reactor in Tamil Nadu. His demand comes at a time when the project has returned to national attention because of its latest technical breakthrough.
Kalpakkam PFBR Reaches First Criticality
The 500 MWe Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam attained first criticality on April 6, 2026, marking the beginning of a controlled nuclear chain reaction. This is a key stage before the reactor can move toward commercial power generation. The project is central to India’s long-term three-stage nuclear power strategy, which aims to make better use of domestic nuclear resources and strengthen long-term energy security.
Fast Breeder Reactor Debate Intensifies
The Kalpakkam reactor has faced delays over the years, and critics have repeatedly questioned its cost, safety and viability. Supporters, however, view it as an important strategic project for India’s nuclear future. Vaiko’s intervention is likely to sharpen the debate further, especially in Tamil Nadu, where nuclear projects often attract strong political and public scrutiny. The controversy now places the spotlight on whether the project will continue to advance smoothly toward the next stages of commissioning.
