US Weighs Options Including Military for Greenland
The White House has confirmed that President Donald Trump is actively discussing how the United States could pursue acquiring Greenland, a large Arctic island that is an autonomous territory of Denmark. Officials described the issue as a national security priority due to Greenland’s strategic position in the Arctic and global interests from Russia and China.
US Position on Greenland
The White House said Trump and his advisers are considering a range of options to achieve the goal, and using the U.S. military remains “always an option” available to the commander-in-chief. The administration framed the efforts as part of broader foreign policy planning to strengthen American influence in the region. However, officials also noted that diplomacy is the first choice and that negotiations or other political solutions would be preferred over force.
Response From Denmark and Allies
Greenland and Denmark have repeatedly made clear that Greenland is not for sale and that its sovereignty must be respected. European leaders, including those from NATO member states, have spoken out against any unilateral action that could undermine international law or alliance commitments. Denmark is responsible for Greenland’s defence as part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and NATO allies have stressed that territorial integrity must be upheld.
