US Weighs Mother of All Bombs Strikes on Iran
The United States military has reportedly developed new strike plans that could involve deploying its most powerful non-nuclear bomb against Iranian nuclear facilities and energy infrastructure. The proposals, reported on October 15, 2026, are among several military options being considered if President Donald Trump authorises renewed combat operations against Iran.
US Military Considers Mother of All Bombs Against Iran
American defence officials familiar with military planning said the proposals include the possible use of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) bomb, commonly known as the Mother of All Bombs.
The weapon is designed to produce an exceptionally powerful explosion over a large area and is primarily effective against surface targets and fortifications.
However, military officials have reportedly questioned whether the bomb could achieve Washington’s objectives, particularly against Iran’s deeply buried nuclear installations.
The reported plans have not been independently verified, and no decision to deploy the weapon has been confirmed.
Iran Nuclear Facilities and Energy Infrastructure in Focus
Potential targets reportedly include Iranian nuclear installations and strategically important energy facilities.
Iran maintains several fortified nuclear sites, including underground installations designed to withstand aerial bombardment.
Unlike specialised bunker-busting weapons, the GBU-43/B is not designed to penetrate deeply buried structures, raising questions about its effectiveness against hardened nuclear facilities.
The United States previously deployed the MOAB in Afghanistan in April 2017 against an Islamic State tunnel complex.
