US Warns Citizens to Avoid Travel to Iran

The United States has issued a renewed Level‑4 “Do Not Travel” advisory for Iran, strongly urging all American citizens to avoid visiting the country. The advisory specifically warns that dual US‑Iran nationals face an increased risk of arbitrary arrest, wrongful detention, and limited consular support. Iran does not recognise dual nationality, which complicates the ability of foreign governments to assist detained individuals.

New Safety Website Launched

To raise awareness, the US government has launched a new online platform explaining the risks associated with travel to Iran. The website offers guidance to travelers and includes multilingual content, with special emphasis on warning Iranian‑American citizens who may be planning family or heritage-related visits.

High-Level Threats Cited

Officials pointed to ongoing risks including terrorism, civil unrest, surveillance, and potential kidnapping. Despite a temporary lull in regional violence, the advisory states that Iran continues to pose significant danger to American travelers. With no US Embassy in Tehran, American citizens must rely on the Swiss Embassy for emergency assistance, which severely limits the speed and scope of help in crisis situations.

Cases Prompt Renewed Concern

The travel warning follows several incidents involving US citizens being detained or questioned upon arrival in Iran. In one recent case, several travelers had to flee the country amid rising tensions and border delays. Authorities fear that any escalation in geopolitical conflict could place visitors in immediate danger.

The US State Department has urged citizens currently in Iran to leave as soon as safely possible and to stay updated on travel advisories.
