US, UK, France Block UN Bid to Sanction BLA
Pakistan and China jointly proposed to list the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its militant wing, the Majeed Brigade, as terrorist groups under the UN Security Council’s 1267 sanctions regime. This move would attach global sanctions if approved.
Western Powers Say No for Now
The United States, United Kingdom, and France blocked the proposal. They placed a technical hold on it, saying there is currently insufficient evidence to link these groups to Al Qaeda or ISIL—an essential requirement for listing under the 1267 framework.
Previous U.S. Designation
Earlier in August 2025, the U.S. had already designated both BLA and the Majeed Brigade as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs) domestically. However, that designation did not automatically extend into a UN-backed sanctions list. The current move was intended to secure UN sanctions status.
