US Trade Delegation to Visit India

US trade negotiators will arrive in New Delhi on Tuesday for talks with the Commerce Ministry. The discussions were confirmed by Special Secretary Rajesh Agarwal and will focus on easing trade tensions between the two countries.

Aim of the Talks

The meeting is expected to address the steep tariffs recently imposed by the US on Indian exports. Indian officials have raised concerns that these duties are hurting exporters’ liquidity and global competitiveness.

Rising Tariff Disputes

The US recently added a 25% extra tariff on certain Indian goods, taking total duties to as high as 50%. Washington linked the move to India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, while New Delhi has defended its position as necessary for energy security.

India’s Preparations

The Commerce Ministry is preparing a relief package for exporters impacted by the tariffs. Officials are also exploring measures to reduce the long-term effect of trade barriers while keeping open the possibility of further dialogue with the US.
