US To Send Trade Negotiators To India For Fresh Talks

A delegation from the United States, led by a senior trade official, is scheduled to travel to India next week to resume negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement. The move is part of ongoing efforts by both countries to finalise a framework that addresses trade barriers, tariffs and market access.

What The Visit Means

The visiting U.S. team will meet Indian counterparts to work on the remaining issues in the proposed bilateral trade pact. The talks aim to address contentious points such as tariffs, access to agricultural and manufacturing sectors, and regulatory harmonisation. Officials on both sides hope the fresh round of negotiations can bring the two economies closer to a deal before the end of the year, though some sensitive sectors may remain contentious.

India’s Position And Concerns

India has repeatedly emphasised that any trade agreement must protect its domestic interests — particularly in agriculture, dairy and small business sectors. New Delhi has indicated it will not compromise on safeguards for its farmers and small enterprises while pursuing greater market access abroad. Among Indian stakeholders, there is cautious optimism, but also concern that terms should not disadvantage local producers.

What Comes Next

If talks go smoothly, negotiators could finalise at least the first phase of the agreement in the coming months. However, the success of the deal depends on resolving disagreements over market access, tariffs and non-tariff barriers. As negotiations resume, both countries appear committed to a “balanced and mutually beneficial” trade pact.
