US Seeks India’s Backing Against China’s Rare Earth Curbs

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said Washington expects support from India and other allies to counter China’s move to tighten rare earth export controls. He described Beijing’s step as “China versus the world” and expressed confidence that democracies in Asia and Europe would align with the U.S. position.

Export Controls and Retaliation Threat

China recently expanded its restrictions, adding five new rare earth elements to its export control list and strengthening curbs on semiconductor-related materials. Bessent warned that “everything is on the table” as possible countermeasures if Beijing refuses to roll back the restrictions, raising fears of further escalation.

India’s Position and Strategic Stakes

India has been working to cut its reliance on Chinese supplies by joining the Minerals Security Partnership and promoting domestic production of magnets and critical minerals. While India is viewed as a crucial partner in supply chain diversification, ongoing trade frictions with Washington may influence how it aligns on U.S.-led initiatives.
