US Says Russia Pauses Ukraine Energy Attacks
US President Donald Trump said Russia has agreed to temporarily halt attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amid harsh winter conditions. Trump said the pause followed direct communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin and was intended to ease civilian suffering during extreme cold.
Ukraine Seeks Verification
Ukraine responded cautiously to the announcement. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv would judge the pause based on actions on the ground, noting that Ukraine has not received formal confirmation of a broader ceasefire. Ukrainian officials said attacks in some areas have continued and stressed that any pause must be verifiable.
No Formal Ceasefire Yet
Russia has not publicly confirmed a nationwide halt to strikes. Officials in Kyiv and Moscow have both indicated that talks are ongoing, but there is no agreement on a long-term ceasefire. The situation remains fluid as winter pressures increase the urgency around protecting power generation and heating systems.
Talks Continue
Diplomatic efforts involving the United States, Ukraine and Russia are continuing through intermediaries. While the reported pause is being described as limited and temporary, it has raised hopes for further humanitarian steps if sustained.
